We spoke to Issy on a rare sunny Saturday morning and were immediately taken by how bubbly and energetic she was! Issy is a recent Master's graduate having completed her degree in radio production during Covid. Unfortunately, like many students at the moment, finding employment is difficult. However, Issy is not content to just sit back and relax but is instead making use of her time to help the less fortunate...
Issy is a volunteer for one of our more recent charity partners, Walking With in North Tyneside. The charity is focused on helping support those seeking asylum in the North Tyneside area. They are one of the many small charities delivering a huge amount of positive impact that we are very proud to be supporting.
Issy spends her time doing all sorts of tasks in the Walking With Centre but volunteers mainly as an assistant in the English classes. She notes that the clients, who expect so little, are so appreciative of the classes as it means that they can learn to converse with people in the community in which they now find themselves. Issy remembers a particularly lovely moment when she brought in a word-search and gave it to one of the clients "She was just so happy to receive it and try to learn new words."
Like most volunteers we speak to, Issy has had a wonderful experience volunteering. Issy tells us that one of the benefits to her of volunteering is the really powerful perspective on life it can bring. Issy says “If someone who has had such a tough life experience can be so upbeat, then I can get on with it”
When asked about her motivations behind volunteering, Issy told us “I love helping people and making a real difference, you may help someone to speak a new phrase, there is an immediate effect, and it may make their day just a little bit better.”
Naturally we had to ask how Issy found using our app just to make sure it is tip top, Issy said “Rather than going back and forth on email to decide which day you’ll attend, I can just go on the app, press one button and then after I am done I can quickly log my time”.
