Jacky proves that leading a busy life does not necessarily have to prevent you from volunteering. Jacky took early retirement from her role in HR at a bank but now spends most of her time with her 2 daughters and visiting the rest of her extended family.
Jacky has always enjoyed giving back to her community and felt that during lockdown it was also just a great way to get out and do her bit to help out. Jacky volunteers for various charities including VSI Alliance who use Volunteero to help manage volunteering activities like shopping, prescription drops and admin tasks.
Like many, Jacky had found that lots of volunteering roles that are advertised are too restrictive in terms of their time commitment and flexibility. In Jacky’s words, she needed something whereby she could “dip in and out” to fit things around her many other commitments.
For Jacky, flexibility was key. Being able to go on to our app, see what is available, the location and when it needs doing means she can plan her volunteering around her life.
Here is just a sample of some of the volunteering activities Jacky has undertaken; dog walking, delivering food parcels, check-in calls to isolated people and being a covid vaccination steward.
When asked about any meaningful interactions that stand out, Jacky told us about when she walked someone's dog during lockdown. The gentleman lived alone and could not go out because he had to shield.
“His dog was his lifeline and if he didn’t have help to walk the dog, he felt he would have to give up the dog because it wasn’t fair”
In helping to walk the dog Jacky and other volunteers allowed this man to keep his canine companion. The impact of volunteering and stories like these never cease to amaze us.
We asked Jacky if she had any advice for those thinking about volunteering, she said “It doesn’t matter how much time you have, even a little bit here or there, every little bit helps”. There are so many charities and so many different causes, there is something out there for everyone.
